After the historic India–EU trade deal, the US appears to be on the back foot. According to a Newsweek report, under this pressure, Trump reduced tariffs on India from 25% to 18%. The clear objective is to position India as a strong manufacturing and strategic alternative to China, while also curbing Russia’s oil revenues. Trump claimed that India would stop buying Russian oil and instead purchase oil from the US (and possibly Venezuela), but the Indian government has so far remained silent on these assertions. The EU deal has strengthened India’s bargaining power, giving “Made in India” products major relief in the US market.However, claims such as $500 billion in purchases and zero tariffs remain unclear—the real picture will emerge only after official documents are released.
